Get Your Shit Together Ritual
Paralyzed by a mountain of undone tasks, messy rooms, unread emails, and shameful procrastination.
What this ritual is for
Executive dysfunction feeds on grandiosity. You think you need a five-year master plan; what you actually need is ten square inches of clean desk and ten minutes of focus.
What you need(4 items)
- A wooden match
- A timer (kitchen timer or phone in do-not-disturb)
- A permanent marker or pen
- A scrap of cardboard or thick paper
Practical substitutions
You don't need to buy specialty supplies. Use what's in your home.
- →No matches? A lighter, or simply snapping a dry twig cleanly in half.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Acknowledge the freeze
Sit down and do not touch your phone. Say aloud: 'I am not lazy; I am overwhelmed and avoiding discomfort. I can tolerate discomfort for ten minutes.'
The single target rule
Write down EXACTLY ONE task on the card in bold letters. Not three. Not seven. One. (e.g., 'Take out the kitchen trash', 'Reply to Dave’s email', 'Unpack the suitcase').
Strike the match
Strike the match. Watch the flame flare, stabilize, and burn down toward your fingers before blowing it out into a safe dish. The flare represents the sudden burst of will needed to overcome friction.
The ten-minute sprint
Set your timer for 10 minutes. Stand up immediately. Do not check notifications. Work on the single written task until the bell rings.
Journal & Reflection Prompt
“What feeling am I hoping to escape by delaying this boring responsibility?”
Safety Notice
Match flame burns hot; drop into a ceramic dish before it reaches your fingers.
